About the Sculpture:

One of Auguste Rodin’s most famous works, The Age of Bronze attests to the artist's technical skill and attention to living nature. The statue recalls one of the earliest ages of mankind, yet stands devoid of any element that could shed light on the subject's identity. Also known as The Awakening Man or The Vanquished One, the work was first exhibited in 1877 at the Cercle Artistique in Brussels, then drew international attention at the Salon in Paris. Here, the piece's incredible realism led critics to accuse the artist of employing a life cast of his model rather than sculpting the figure entirely by hand. Rodin ultimately proved that the quality of his sculpture's modeling was the result of a thorough study of profiles, earning him the commission for The Gates of Hell in 1880.
